ABILAC holds workshop on production of Trilingual Dictionary
ABILAC has been persistently pursuing its effort to help various ethnic language communities in Northeast India enrich their respective mother tongues. It has, from time to time been producing and publishing trilingual dictionaries for these languages in collaboration with the respective communities. This consistent effort of the institute has already resulted in the publication of the Mising-Assamese-English; Rabha-Assamese-English and Karbi-Assamese-English dictionaries. As part of this campaign, ABILAC hosted and conducted a workshop (which is actually a part of a series of such workshops for the respective languages) on production of trilingual dictionaries for the Bodo, Deuri and Tiwa languages from 21st June to 28th June, 2021 at the Bodo Socio-Literary Cultural Complex in Guwahati. Participants from each of the three communities from all over Assam participated in this workshop and worked towards the production of the Bodo-Assamese-English, Tiwa-Assamese-English and Deuri-Assamese-English dictionaries. Along with the editing of the entries for all the three dictionaries, sound files of each of the entries of both the Tiwa and Deuri dictionaries have also been recorded using sophisticated recording device. Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Hon’ble Minister of Education, Govt. of Assam and also the Chairman of the Governing body of ABILAC graced the valedictory session of the workshop and highly appreciated the efforts of ABILAC as well as of the members of each of the participating communities for this important work. He presented certificates to the participants. The valedictory session was also attended by the respective presidents of the Sahitya Sabhas of each of the participating communities.
Celebration of World Folklore Day
ABILAC celebrates The World Folklore Day in collaboration with the Department of Folklore Studies, Gauhati University at the campus of ABILAC on the 22nd of August, 2019. On this occasion famous anthropologist and the former Head of the Department of Anthropology Prof. Birinchi kumar Medhi addressed the gathering as the Chief guest. Prof. Medhi, his speech appreciated the richness of folkloric elements in the life and culture of the people of Assam. This occasion was also graced, among others by distinguished folklorist Dr. Nabin Ch. Sarma, folklorist Dr. Anil Baro, Head, Department of Folklore Studies, Gauhati University, Abul Hussein and other research scholars and people with interest in Folklore studies.
International conference on Belief Narratives in Folklore Studies: Narrating the Supernatural
A three day International conference on the topic Belief Narrative: Narrating the Supernatural organised jointly byBelief Narrative Network for International Society for Folk Narrative Research (ISFNR) and The Anundoram Borooah Institute of Language, Art & Culture (ABILAC), Assam has been conducted from 6th to 8th February, 2019 at the Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship, located at Lalmati Guwahati -29. This three day conference has provided the opportunity to around 50 folklorists from around the world including India to present and discuss as many academically stirring aspects of folklore in the form of papers and interactions.
The inaugural session was chaired by Prof retd Ashok kr. Goswami , a renowned indologist, who is a former Head, Department of Sanskrit, and also the chairman of the Executive Committee of ABILAC. Other dignitaries who graced the occasion are Prof Satyendra Narayan Goswami, member of Executive Committee, Prof. Dipti Phukon Patgiri, Prof Sadhana Naithani, Chairperson ISFNR, Prof. Mirjam Mencej, Chairperson BNN, Prof. Ulo Valk Renowned Folklorist from University of Tartu, and Professor Dilip kr. Kalita Director, ABILAC.
Prof. Dilip Kalita while welcoming the scholars on behalf of the organising committee and other dignitaries wished the conference a success. Prof. Mirjam Mencej Chairperson BNN delivered her address as the guest of honour. She outlined the events in the previous BNN conference where Guwahati was chosen as the next venue of BNN. The other guest of honour Prof. sadhana Naithani, chairperson ISFNR and Professor of German Studies JNU hailed the effort of ABILAC in holding a seminar of such a mega scale. She also stressed on the importance of the genre of Belief Narrative within the broader scope of Folklore studies. Renowned folklorist Prof. Ulo Valk while addressing the gathering described this Northeast Indian region as the papradise of folklorists. He also stressed on the need of more research based studies into the realm of folklore studies to be undertaken in this part of the world. Prof. Anil kr. Baro, Head, Department of Folklore while addressing the gathering commented that this is the first BNN conference held in Guwahati and wised the conference a success.
Following the trend of offering the best Research Paper award to one of the student participants of the conference for the last few years, Mirjam Mencej announced the name of Kikee Doma Bhutia as the recipient of this honour for the year 2018. This was followed by the vote of thanks which was delivered by Dr. Karuna Kanta Kakati, Associate Professor, ABILAC.
Parallel sessions, each of which consisted of four paper presentations, were conducted in two halls on each of the three days of the conference. These sessions have led to a substantive amount of discussions and interactions on the main as well as sub topics of the conference. The sub topics of the with Beliefs and Supernaturals, Beliefs and the Lore of Saints, Beliefs and witch hunting, Contemporary belief Narratives (Urban legends, the play on belief narratives by politicians and so on.), Beliefs and Vernacular Practices, Beliefs, Faith and Fear, Beliefs and Sacrifice.
Seminar on Anundoram Borooah’s Contributions and its Relevance at Present
A national seminar on Anundoram Borooah’s Contributions and its Relevance at Present has been jointly organised by ABILAC and The Asiatic Society, Kolkata an institution of National importance declared by Government of India under the ministry of Culture. The seminar took place at National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj North Eastern Regional Centre, NIRD Lane, Jawaharnagar, Khanapara, Guwahati 22nd and 23rd November, 2019. This seminar was inaugurated by the education minister Assam and the Chairman of the Governing council of ABILAC, Sri Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The inauguration session was also graced by Dr. . Satyabrata Chakrabarti, General Secretary of The Asiatic Society, Professor Ashok Kumar Goswami, a noted Indologist and Sanskrit scholar as well as Vice-Chairman, Governing Council of ABILAC, Shri Amalesh Dasgupta, a noted film maker and Prof. Dilip Kumar Kalita, Director, ABILAC. This was followed by two days of intellectual and academic parleys in the form of presentation of papers on the subject.
Conference on Folklore research
ABILAC convenes a conference of the recipients of the Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Fellowship on folklore research in its conference hall. This conference was participated by seven recipients and seven folklorists.
Workshop on Lexicography
A six day workshop (20th-25th July, 2009) on Lexicography was held by ABILAC at its office premise aimed at training participants towards production of dictionaries in indigenous languages. In this connection the director Dr. Dilip Kalita informs that ABILAC has already completed the Mising-Assamese-English and Rabha-Assamese-English dictionaries. This will be followed by other three dictionaries viz Bodo-Assamese-English, Karbi-Assamese-English and Dimasa-Assamese-English dictionaries. ABILAC organized a three day (from 10th to 12th November, 2009) national workshop on Literary criticism and problems in linguistic metalanguage at B.H. College, Hauli. The workshop deliberated on the problems of Assamese equivalents to the linguistic metalanguage related to the study of language along with the post modernist theories which prevalent in the English literature and criticism. This workshop was led by a number of renowned scholars like Prof. Phanindranarayan Dutta Barua, former director Central Institute of Indian Languages, Dr. Tabu Taid, chairman ABILAC, Dr. Dilip Kr Kalita, Director, ABILAC and Dr. Lilavati Saikia Bora, Professor, Department of Assamese, Gauhati University.

Training workshop on Lexicography
ABILAC holds in collaboration with Asom Sahitya Sabha a training workshop on Lexicography from 24th to 30th October, 1991. This workshop was attended by 45 participants from different parts of the state representing Assamese, Bodo, Mising, Rabha, Tiwa, Deuri and Dimasa language speakers.

This is the seventh of the series of workshops that is being held by ABILAC. This six day workshop has been attended by the learned members of the Deuri community including the President and secretary of the Deuri Sahitya Sabha. It is one of the various endeavours of ABILAC towards development of indigenous languages and cultures.

This workshop has been attended by the learned members of the Deuri community who has put in efforts towards preparation of a valuable dictionary in their language.

Lecture on Anundoram Borooah’s ‘Ancient Geography of India’
A lecture on the ‘Ancient Geography of India’ by the great scholar Anundoram Borooah has been held by the institute in collaboration with the Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti (BISS), Guwahati Zila Samiti, on the 4th November, 2017. Dr. Niranjan Kalita who is the editor of the bi monthly journal of the Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti ‘Itihas Barta’ delivered the lecture on the topic ‘A critical Analysis of Pandit Pravar Anundoram Borooah’s Ancient Geography of India’. Hemanta Dhing Mazumdar, organizing secretary of BISS, North east India, also attended and delivered a lecture on this occasion. Director, ABILAC, Dr. Dilip Kumar Kalita delivered a welcome speech on the occasion. This talk was attended by scholars and other esteemed guests from different institutions.
National Conference on ‘Cultural Diversity of Northeast India and its Role in the development of Social Unity’
A national conference on the topic ‘Cultural Diversity of Northeast India and its Role in the development of Social Unity’ was held at B.H. College, Howli by the Department of Assamese, Howli college in collaboration with, ABILAC on the 16th and 17th June, 2017.
ABILAC holds the second workshop aimed at producing a Deuri-Assamese-English dictionary in its office premise from 7th July, 2014. This workshop has been attended by a number of experts on the Deuri language and also by other learned members of the Deuri community.

A five day workshop on the production of a Nepali-Assamese-English dictionary is held at ABILAC from 3rd January, 2017.
Lecture on Anundoram Borooah’s ‘Ancient Geography of India’
A lecture on the ‘Ancient Geography of India’ by the great scholar Anundoram Borooah has been held by the institute in collaboration with the Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti (BISS), Guwahati Zila Samiti, on the 4th November, 2017. Dr. Niranjan Kalita who is the editor of the bi monthly journal of the Bharatiya Itihas Sankalan Samiti ‘Itihas Barta’ delivered the lecture on the topic ‘A critical Analysis of Pandit Pravar Anundoram Borooah’s Ancient Geography of India’. Hemanta Dhing Mazumdar, organizing secretary of BISS, North east India, also attended and delivered a lecture on this occasion. Director, ABILAC, Dr. Dilip Kumar Kalita delivered a welcome speech on the occasion. This talk was attended by scholars and other esteemed guests from different institutions.
National Conference on ‘Cultural Diversity of Northeast India and its Role in the development of Social Unity’
A national conference on the topic ‘Cultural Diversity of Northeast India and its Role in the development of Social Unity’ was held at B.H. College, Howli by the Department of Assamese, Howli college in collaboration with, ABILAC on the 16th and 17th June, 2017.
ABILAC holds the second workshop aimed at producing a Deuri-Assamese-English dictionary in its office premise from 7th July, 2014. This workshop has been attended by a number of experts on the Deuri language and also by other learned members of the Deuri community.
