Folklore and Oral Tradition

Research and study of the rich variety of folklore and oral tradition that exist among the numerous ethnic communities and in Northeast India forms one of the central focuses of the institute. Hence the department of Folklore and Oral tradition of ABILAC deals in the realm of documentation, research and preservation of such variegated facets of folklore heritage being nurtured among the various communities in Northeast India. Some of the specific areas of focus of the department

  • Collection of Folklore materials including Folktales of different ethnic groups of Assam
  • Translation and publication of folktales of different ethnic communities
  • Promotion of academic research on folklore study in the form of different projects
  • Preparation of database of folklore materials such as compendium of folklore of Assam, etc.

The department undertook various projects since its inception towards fulfilling its objectives.
