ABILAC to be Upgraded as Deemed University: A Landmark Step Towards Advancing Indigenous Research and Knowledge Systems
The Anundoram Borooah Institute of Language, Art and Culture (ABILAC), Assam, is proud to share a momentous development in its journey of academic and cultural excellence. In a high-level meeting held today at Janata Bhawan under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Minister of Education, Government of Assam, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, key discussions were held regarding the future growth and expansion of the Institute. Prof. Sudeshna Bhattacharjya, Director of ABILAC, along with senior officials of the Department of Education and ABILAC, were present at the meeting.
One of the most significant outcomes of this meeting is the Government of Assam’s proposal to upgrade ABILAC into a Deemed University. Furthermore, it is proposed that the institution be renamed as the Anundoram Borooah Social Science Research Council, thereby reflecting a broader and more inclusive academic mandate that spans across language, literature, art, culture, and the social sciences of Assam and the Northeast region.
This forward-looking initiative is a reflection of the visionary leadership of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, whose commitment to academic excellence and cultural preservation continues to transform the educational landscape of the state. ABILAC expresses its deepest gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister for his unwavering support towards the growth of research institutions in Assam.
We also extend our sincere thanks to the Hon’ble Education Minister, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, for his proactive engagement, leadership, and thoughtful guidance in helping shape the Institute’s future. His continuous support has been crucial in aligning ABILAC’s objectives with the broader educational vision of the state.
This proposal marks a historic milestone in the evolution of ABILAC. The transition to a deemed university will empower the Institute to undertake advanced academic programs, foster interdisciplinary research, and emerge as a leading center for the study and promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Social Sciences in Northeast India.
We look forward to working closely with the Government of Assam in realizing this transformative vision and continuing our mission of preserving, promoting, and advancing the diverse cultural and linguistic heritage of the region.
ABILAC pays tribute to the victims of the Plane Crash at Ahmedabad
With heavy hearts and deepest sorrow, the ABILAC family offers our heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and friends of Flight 787-8 Dreamliners passengers and crew. Yesterday afternoon, this tragic accident claimed 241 souls—230 passengers, 12 dedicated crew members, and countless residents on the ground—and left a single survivor who now bears witness to an unimaginable loss.
We extend our infinite gratitude to the first responders, rescue teams, medical personnel, and volunteers who braved the flames and debris—working tirelessly at the crash site beside B.J. Medical College—to bring comfort and closure.
To the families who are left with emptiness and unanswered questions: may you find strength in community, solace in each other, and hope in the solidarity shown by people across India and around the world—including leaders from the UK, Canada, Singapore, and others who have stood with you in grief .

At this moment of crisis, the ABILAC family stands firmly with the Indian Nation and the Indian Armed Forces. We, in strictest of terms, condemn the barbaric attack at Pehelgam and firmly support the retaliatory steps undertaken by the Indian Forces. The perpetrators of this barbaric mayhem and the Pakistani terror establishments need to be decisively defeated in such a way, that no one in future would even think of attacking our great nation.
