Deori-Assamese-English Trilingual Dictionary Released

Following its long-standing tradition of producing trilingual dictionaries in the indigenous languages of Assam, the Anundoram Borooah Institute of Language, Art and Culture, Assam (ABILAC) formally released the Deori–Assamese–English Trilingual Dictionary at the 36th Triennial Conference of the Deori Sahitya Sabha. The conference was held at the Nandeswar Deori Chario Field, Bahgora Adarsha Deori Village, Lakhimpur, on 29 January 2026.

The Deori–Assamese–English Dictionary is the outcome of a sustained and active collaboration between ABILAC and the Deori Sahitya Sabha, a partnership that began in 2013. The dictionary was ceremonially released by Shri Bipul Deori, a distinguished member of the Deori society, in the august presence of Dr. Saranan Deori, President, Deori Sahitya Sabha; Shri Lila Deori, President, Deori Bhasha Gabeshana Samiti; Shri Gobinda Taid, President, All Assam Indigenous Sahitya Sabha; Dr. Palash Kumar Nath, Coordinator of the Deori Dictionary and Assistant Professor, ABILAC; Dr. Karuna Kanta Kakati, Associate Professor, ABILAC; Shri Bhupendra Nath Kalita, Finance and Administrative Officer, ABILAC; Dr. Ridip Jyoti Kalita, Librarian, ABILAC; Shri Saurabh Barua, ABILAC; Ms. Purnima Borborua, ABILAC; and Rituraj Basumatary, ABILAC.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Lila Deori, President of the Deori Bhasha Gabeshana Samiti, along with other distinguished guests, expressed immense happiness on behalf of the Deori community at the release of the dictionary. He conveyed his sincere gratitude to ABILAC for undertaking and successfully completing this significant work. He particularly acknowledged the visionary initiative of the former Director of ABILAC, Dr. Dilip Kumar Kalita, who had initiated the dictionary project, and expressed appreciation to the present Director, Prof. Sudeshna Bhattacharjya, for taking the project forward and bringing it to its successful completion. He also specially acknowledged the dedicated efforts of Dr. Palash Kumar Nath for spearheading this collaborative venture as the project coordinator and for delivering this valuable linguistic resource to the Deori Sahitya Sabha and the wider Deori community. He further extended his thanks to all members of ABILAC for their cooperation and support throughout the project.

Dr. Karuna Kanta Kakati, while addressing the gathering, highlighted the role of ABILAC as a premier research institution engaged in the documentation, preservation, and promotion of the indigenous languages and cultures of Assam.

Dr. Palash Kumar Nath, speaking as the Coordinator of the Deori Dictionary project, apprised the audience of the methodological processes involved in the compilation of the dictionary and elaborated on the various academic, linguistic, and logistical challenges encountered during its long gestation period. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to all community resource persons, scholars, and contributors whose untiring efforts made the dictionary possible.

The release of the Deori–Assamese–English Trilingual Dictionary adds yet another feather to the cap of ABILAC, reinforcing its position as a premier institution continuously committed to the development, documentation, and revitalization of the indigenous languages of Assam.
