The mission and vision of Anundoram Borooah Institute of Language, Art and Culture (ABILAC), Assam includes promotion and development the indigenous languages. In keeping with this aim, ABILAC has been working actively with various indigenous communities towards publishing, , trilingual dictionaries in the their languages. These dictionaries are designed to have headwords in the source language followed by pronunciation in IPA, grammatical category and meanings of the headword of the source language, Assamese and English. ABILAC began the process of compiling dictionaries in printed form from its inception.
However, of late, it feels the need of online dictionaries in view of the unprecedented changes and overwhelming use of internet particularly by the younger generation. Taking into consideration these facts ABILAC has decided to take up the task of converting the dictionaries printed and published by ABILAC into online dictionaries. Each of these online dictionaries will provide the search facility for users to look for any words in the source language and its meanings in both Assamese and English. The dictionary will be also searchable by words in Assamese and in English. ABILAC hopes that such an initiative will make these dictionaries more user-friendly with much broader access to users,both natives and non-natives of these languages. To start with, ABILAC has decided to go online with the Karbi-Assamese-English dictionary. In due course of time the other trilingual dictionaries printed and published by the institute are also planned to be converted to online versions. The dictionaries published till now are completed this process for the Karbi trilingual dictionary and has planned for launching other trilingual dictionaries for the Mising-Assamese-English, Rabha-Assamese-English, Nepali-Assamese-English. A few more dictionaries namely Tiwa-Assamese-English, Deuri-Assamese-English, , Boro–Assamese-English, Dimasa–Assamese-English, Bishnupriya Manipuri–Assamese-English Hmar–Assamese-English are in the pipeline..
This effort has been further strengthened by the signing of an MoU between ABILAC and Indira Gandhi National Centre for The Arts (IGNCA) on the 2nd of June, 2023. This has paved the way for conducting collaborative research and activities by both the institutes in future. The ‘Production of Online Dictionary for Karbi, Tiwa and Deuri Languages of Assam’is the first project that is being taken up collaboratively by both the orgnaisations.
